On Saturday, January 9, seven of the nine members who volunteered to be trained to use the SPOT vision screener, went to Concord, NH for a three-hour training session.  We plan to have a practice session as soon as we have the screener.  The first vision screening will be held at Moultonborough Academy, for all students in grades 7-12, on Thursday, January 29th.

The goal of the NH Lions Clubs is to screen at least 1,000 students in 2015 with the larger goal of having every child in the state from six months of age to 20 screened in the near future.

November Dinner Speaker

At the November 17 dinner meeting, after a delicious meat loaf meal, Harry Vogel, the Senior Biologist/Executive Director of the Loon Center gave an interesting and informative slide show presentation on Loons, with an emphasis on the negative effects of lead (especially fishing sinkers and jigs) poising on the loon population.

Large Donation to Operation Kid Sight

The club, via president John Menken and vice-president, Jennifer Willi,  presented a $5,000 check to First Vice District Governor 44H, Scott Wilson to aid in the purchase of 15 new vision screening machines for  OPERATION KID SIGHT in the state of New Hampshire.  NH Lions raised a total of $53,392 which will be matched by Lions International.

Scott will be our “point” man with the Health Source Board, and newly inducted member, Mark Cotrupi with be our coordinator for the vision screening. In addition to Mark, 7 other Moultonborough Lions will be trained on one of the 15 new machines, hopefully during the month of November. The purpose of the screening is to catch any vision problems early and send the individuals to the appropriate eye care professionals.

This will mean 17 vision screening machines for the State (as we already had two) to cover 220 NH towns. The new machines are smaller and can screen @ 100 students in approximately 45 minutes. All students (who return permission forms) from 6 months through grade 6 will be screened, and students in grades 7, 9, and 11.
