July Meetings

This month’s business meeting will be held on Monday, July 1.  The dinner meeting will be held on Monday, July 15, beginning with appetizers at 6 pm and dinner at 7:00.  Hopefully, all or the majority of the scholarship recipients from Moultonborough Academy, Kingswood Regional High School, and Inter-Lakes High School and their parents will attend this meeting and the Lions can meet the recipients and find out a little more about them.

Mark your calendars.  We hope to see as many members as possible at both.

June Dinner Meeting

At last week’s June dinner meeting –delicious pot roast — the new officers were installed for the 2013-2014 year.  Sandy Meskys has “retired” from her six years as treasurer and was awarded a plaque for her dedicated service and putting up with all the difficulties associated with that office.  Also honored were Bob and Elaine Zewski who received the Lions of the Year Award for all that they contribute to the Club, especially the many hours spent on the raffle, our major fundraiser. ( I apologize for the fuzzy photo of the Zewskis.)

Years of Lionism

At the May dinner meeting, two Lions from the Moultonborough Club were given pins honoring their years as Lions.  To the right of club president, Ed Meskys, is Jerry Donovan, celebrating 10 years of membership.  To the left of Ed and being honored for 38 years as a Lion is Ray Putnam.

May Meeting / What’s happening this summer…

The May dinner meeting of the Lions Club was highly entertaining and very informative.  The program was entitled, Good Old Summer Time, and featured speakers from five venues.  Each presentation was not only filled with information on all the activities planned this summer for toddlers through seniors, but was also done with humor and delightful anecdotes.  From left to right in the photo below the speakers were:  Julia Velie (who has organized a three concert series, featuring the youth of the community);  Donna Kuethe and Dan Sturgeon from the Moultonborough Recreation Department (there are even more activities, trips, and lessons this summer, including concerts at the Lion’s Club Gazebo); Betty Alcott from the Town of Sandwich (talking about the special 250 year celebration activities, including several days of Native American festivities); Judy Knowles and Sharon Gulla representing the Moultonborough Public Library (highlighting the children’s summer programs and the free computer lessons): and Bonnie Donahue from Castle in the Clouds (discussing the special programs as well as the free activities at that location).  People who missed the meeting should check out the websites and on-line calendars for these organizations as well as the pamphlets and flyers may of these organizations have available.

The dinner prepared by Donna Grow as well as the plentiful and tasty appetizers prepared by members of the Lions Club were delicious.  The photo below taken at the dinner meeting will also give you a glimpse of the hall renovations – the newly painted wall and the brand new curtains.

Saturday’s Dog Walk (5/17/13)

It was a sunny morning, perfect for walking your dog to raise money for the Fidelco Guide Foundation, Dogs for Sight Project.  Although there were only four walkers and six dogs, over $300 was raised, and the dogs won prizes and ate home-baked dog biscuits.  Think about signing up, getting pledges, and walking your dog at this event next spring.  Just think how much more we might raise.

Keep the date open…

May 25 is White Cane Day — Lions and Scouts will be collecting money to help the blind.  Any Lion interested in helping out at either of the two locations should contact President Ed Meskys (emeskys@roadrunner.com   or  253-6207) to find out specific time slots and locations still waiting to be filled.

Saturday, June 1 –Food Pantry Auction.  All proceeds from the auction go to the two local Food Pantries:  Lakes Region Food Pantry and the pantry at the Moultonborough United Methodist Church.  If you have items to donate (even large pieces of furniture that need to be picked up), contact Mike Lancor (476-8409).  And plan to attend.  Not only are there some very good “buys” but there are chances to win prizes and have a great time while helping out the community,

Saturday evening October 26, we will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Moultonborough Lions Club with a catered dinner and shared memories.  If you have moved out of the area, you might want to plan on a trip back “home” to help us celebrate or send us some Lion photos and memories.

Lions Club Beautification

Phase one of creating a new look inside the Lions Club got underway Friday afternoon (March 22).  Several members of the Women’s Club and four Lions took down curtains, hardware, and wall decorations in preparation for the wall cleaning, sanding and painting to begin this weekend.  Some initial cleaning was also attempted, but more needs to be done.  We will keep you posted on the progress.

Bunco Night

This fun event is sponsored by the Women’s Club and is one of the Club’s scholarship fund-raisers.  Bunco is a fast-paced dice game that is easy to learn.  One switches tables and partners based on winning or losing at the table, so it is a great way to meet others in the community.  The Women’s Club provides excellent refreshments and soda; it is also a BYOB event if you wish.  There are CASH prizes if the lure of a good social time is not enough incentive.  Come.  Bring friends.  Enjoy!

WHEN:  Friday, April 5     WHERE:  Lions Club    COST: $15

It might be called the Moultonborough Lions Club….

It might be called the Moultonborough Lions Club but it’s used by the entire community.

Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm the Lions Club is the home of Meals-on-Wheels. Donna Grow is such a great cook that word has gotten out and I think, but do not know for a fact, that more people come and sit down to eat than the number of meals being sent out on wheels. And believe me when I say a lot of meals go out on wheels! Continue reading
